THE GLASS MENAGERIE: September 5 to 26. At Triad Stage at Pyrle Theater. Memories as fragile as glass are tossed into the air in Tennessee Williams' first great masterpiece. Dreams meet reality and love becomes desperate in a shimmering drama of a family on the edge. Tom struggles in a modern day world while his mother holds tight to a fantasy of Southern gentility and his sister hides amongst the glistening crystalline creatures she collects. With an edge as sharp as broken glass, the play cuts deep into the longing of human hearts. Cost is $10 to $42. 232 South Elm Street

GREENSBORO CONTRA DANCE: September 4, at the Guilford Grange, Guilford School Rd off Lindley Rd, GB. Contra dance from 8-11pm to music by Big Celtic Fun and caller Joy Greenwolfe. CORY SMITH IN CONCERT: September 4, at 7pm. On the Wake Forest College Town, 433 Baity St. the old Ziggy's lot. It will be a celebration for all ages with great music, food and beverages. The show is general admission so feel free to bring lawn chairs and blankets. This an outdoor show with a rain site at the LJVM Education Bldg. across the street. Free.

MEET THE ARTIST IN THE SHOP: September 3, 6:30pm. At the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art. Meet self-taught artist Cher Shaffer and view her vibrant works on paper. She uses any surface she can find-- masonite, old boards, stones. Many of her new works on view are done on cake boxes and repurposed paper.

The Community Arts Cafe is now offering private instruction in piano, theory & composition, and voice & performance at the Gallery of the Arts. Two teachers are available to instruct in classical, jazz, theory and songwriting and one availble for voice & performance. Prospective students should call or drop by the gallery for more information. WATERCOLOR PAINTING CLASS WITH CHUCK MCLACHLAN: Tuesday classes August 10 to September 14, 9am to 4pm and Thursday classes August 12 to September 16, 9am to 4pm. Yew Tree Gallery is pleased to announce a lively six-week painting class will be taught by Chuck McLachlan this summer in Greensboro, North Carolina. At the Yew Tree Gallery, 604 S. Elm St, Greensboro. Bring whatever you usually use. Watercolor paints and paper can be purchased at cost from Chuck at the workshop. A supplies list will be sent once you register. E. FAYE COLLINS AND INEZ RUCHTE AT ARTWORKS GALLERY: August 3 to 28. Opening reception August, 2-4pm. Artworks Gallery, Inc. is located at 564 North Trade Street, Winston Salem. Gallery hours are: Tue.- Sat. 11-5. Artworks Gallery presents a two-person exhibit entitled, "A Closer Look: Curiosity and Wonder", with handmade paper and collage pieces by E. Faye Collins, and black and white photographs by Inez Ruchte. E. Faye Collins' work, entitled "A Closer Look: Thorns & Tendrils" is a continuation of her interest in the details of plants. BELLY DANCING CLASSES: Known for increasing balance, fluidity, strength and grace, belly dance is becoming an increasingly popular dance form in America. Designed for the beginner or the dancer seeking a review, the class includes instruction on correct belly dance posture, basic isolation moves, such as hip drops; figure 8s; torso, head, and hip slides; hip circles and a few traveling moves. Contemporary belly dance incorporates elements of ballet, so this class will also include an introduction to arabesque, rond de jambe, plie, chasse and more. Handouts and music are included. ART AFTER SCHOOL:Theatre Art Galleries will be offering Kaleidoscope Kids, an after school program for children ages 6 to 10 years old. This introduction to art will help children develop basic art skills and create a portfolio of their work. Children will have future opportunities to participate in TAG's Young Artists Among Us exhibition in 2011. Classes will be held on Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., September 2 - October 7. The tuition for this new program is $60 per child. Classes will be held in the Kaleidoscope Youth Gallery at Theatre Art Galleries at 220 E. Commerce Avenue. HIGH POINT CELEBRATION BAND: Attention Musicians 18 to 80! Whether you played in the band in high school or college, there is an arts education program for adult musicians. So dust off your sticks, loosen up your lips, and get ready to make some music for years to come. In its third season, the High Point Celebration Band is cranking up again for another exciting year of musical performance. The Celebration Band is under the baton of Wally West. Mr. West is a professional musician and teacher who also directs the John Coltrane Jazz Workshop and the Youth Jazz Orchestra sponsored by the Arts Council. Weeklyrehearsals are on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Arts Council's rehearsal space at 305 N. Main Street, Suite 222, High Point, NC. The first rehearsal of this performance season will be September 7. There is a monthly tuition of $30 (partial and full scholarships are available). ART CLASSES FOR HOMESCHOOLERS: Homeschool Atelier will be offered at Theatre Art Galleries this fall at the Kaleidoscop Youth Gallery at TAG, 220 E. Commerce Avenue. This general art class for 6 to 10 year olds will explore basic art technical and introduce students to essential art history and appreciation. CLARK FLORY & NANCY HAYES: Artworks Gallery presents a two-person exhibit of paintings entitled "Elsewhere" by Chris Flory, and collages entitled "Greeting Cards from Planet Earth" by Nancy Hayes. Chris Flory is showing small acrylic on panel paintings most of which were inspired by a recent 3 month trip to Paris. Nancy Hayes is showing collages that are a tapestry of images as an homage to the surviving beasts of the natural world, revealing a sense of their peril and frailty. HELEN ETTERS FEATURED ARTIST: Digital imaging artist, Helen Etters, will be the featured artist for the month of September in The Community Arts Cafe's Gallery of the Arts. Helen's work has won awards in national juried competitions, has been shown and sold in galleries in NC and Virginia, and, in 2009, two of her digital creations were exhibited in the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. ARTS ON 4TH!: The Community Arts Café will host "Arts on 4th" on September 3rd, 2010 from 7pm to 10pm in conjunction with the First Friday Gallery Hop with a variety of events, both inside and outside of their new facility at 411 West Fourth Street. Fourth Street will be blocked between Spruce and Marshall Streets for performances and arts demonstrations. Performances include a fire act by Jacob Felder and Kara Chambers, an interactive multi-cultural dance program with Iara Kendrick, and Jordan Meads on Celtic flute and guitar. Visual artists will be demonstrating as well.
Inside, the works of Helen Etters will be featured in the Gallery of the Arts as 'Artist of the Month' for September. Kathy Brusnighan's works remain in the Underground Theatre Gallery and Frankie Denton's works remain in the Conference Room Gallery through mid-September. Student works displayed in the Development Center Gallery. Plus, the work of Bill Sherbak will be featured in the gallery at Hutch & Harris across the street from CAC.
