THEATRE/DANCE
Only Skin Deep? Tattooing in World Cultures. January 5 to August 28. Museum of Anthropology, Wake Forest University. In this exhibit, student curators explore why ancient mummies, members of traditional societies, and Wake Forest students are tattooed and with what designs. The traditional implements, historic illustrations, and contemporary photographs on display will excite tattoo aficionados and those just curious about a widespread custom. Admission is free. SURFACING EXHIBITION: Exhibition at Gateway Gallery. The exhibit will feature pottery by Valarie Williams, encaustic paintings by Nadine Buckinger and oil and acrylic paintings by Hilda Spain-Owen and Judy Stead. 336-777-0076, x238. Free.Gateway Gallery, 1006 S. Marshall Street, Winston-Salem.
SPORTS EXHIBITED: Illustrations from the North Carolina Society of Illustrators with images from with world of sports. New exhibition opening February 9 and running through April . Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, February 25 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Theatre Art Galleries, 220 E. Commerce Ave. High Point. EMBODIMENT: Exhibtion Image gallery. The featured North Carolina artists offer a wide range of approaches to the visual representation of the body. Through arresting multimedia installations, photographs, and sculptural works in clay, fiber and metal, visitors will be able to explore changing conceptions of the body, and how a sensorial experience informs a psychological state. The Community Arts Cafe is now offering private instruction in piano, theory & composition, and voice & performance at the Gallery of the Arts. Two teachers are available to instruct in classical, jazz, theory and songwriting and one availble for voice & performance. Prospective students should call or drop by the gallery for more information. NEW WORKS: At Hawthorne Gallery 1281 W 4th Street, Winston Salem. An exhibit by six artists from North Carolina. The exhibit will run through April 10th. SPEAK UP WORKSHOP- An Introduction to Public Speaking: Public speaking is number one on the fear chart. More people are afraid of public speaking than they are of snakes, or spiders, or airplanes, or elevators. The objective of the Speak Up Workshop is to give participants the tools with which to use fear to their advantage, and to replace its debilitating symptoms with positive performance techniques. This free introductory workshop is given by Carol Roan, author of SPEAK EASY: A Guide to successful performances, presentations, speeches and lectures. Saturday, March 13, from 3-4:30pm. 3X2: A Sculpture Exhibition by D.E. Leckie. March 5 - 25. Opening Reception Friday, March 5, 6- 9pm at The Center for Visual Artists. D.E. FOXES' DIN will launch their new demo CD, COLLOQUIAL CACOPHONY, at 7pm on Friday, March 19th and Saturday, March 20th at The Community Arts Cafe in downtown Winston-Salem. FOXES' DIN members Jordan Meads and Daniel Bain will present their original blend of world, cultural and experimental music from their new CD. A copy of the CD is included in the $7 general admission price.

FOXES' DIN
The Community Arts Cafe presents, THE NINA VARIATIONS, by Steven Dietz on Friday, March 12 and Saturday, March 13, both evenings at 7:30pm. In this funny, fierce and heartbreaking homage to THE SEAGULL, Steven Dietz puts Chekhov's star-crossed lovers in a room and doesn't let them out. In forty-three variations on their famous final scene, Nina (a young actress) and Treplev (a young writer), pit their vibrant wit and soaring passions against one another in a fast-paced tour de force of romantic entanglement.

The Nina Variations is directed by Henry Williamson for Real Eyes Theatre, an Art Tasting theatre company. The cast includes Betsey Brown, Kai Stewart, Timothy Thompson, Emily Ussery, Kira Walters and
Henry Williamson.

THE NINA VARIATIONS
The Community Arts Cafe (CAC) is collecting arts related books to fill a new arts lending library that will be a part of a creative writing center in Arts Alley, the 2nd phase of The Community Arts Cafe's arts facility in downtown Winston Salem planned for opening in the coming months. CAC is seeking donated books having to do with any art related subject such as visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, culinary arts, music, film, etc. The lending library will be a community resource dedicated specifically to the arts. The books may be enjoyed by anyone either on the Community Arts Cafe premises or may be checked out for home use. Books may be dropped off during regular business hours at the Gallery of the Arts, 411 West Fourth Street in downtown Winston-Salem. SALEM COLLEGE PIERRETTES PRESENT LITTLE WOMEN: March 11 to 13, 8pm. At Salem Academy & College 601 S. Church St., Winston-Salem. Little Women is a musical based on the beloved 1869 semi-autobiograpical novel by Louisa May Alcott. Set during the Civil War, Little Women is the story of the aspirations, struggles, loves and life lessons of the March family. The North Carolina Black Repertory Company (NCBRC) will hold open auditions on March 13, 2010, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm, at the Arts Council Theater, 610 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. SURRY ARTS COUNCIL PROGRAMS: The Surry Arts Council is proud to welcome a new guitar teacher to its music program. Eddie Day will be teaching guitar lessons at the Surry Arts Council beginning this spring. He can teach acoustic or electric guitar as well as any style of music, from rock and country, to folk and bluegrass. AUDITIONS FOR THE FANTASTICKS: Roles available in the musical include 5 men, 1 girl, 1 boy, and 1 mime. Auditions will be held at 2pm on March 13th and 14th in the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Actors only need to attend one day of auditions, but be prepared to sing! There are also opportunities for those interested in doing behind the scenes work.
