Only Skin Deep? Tattooing in World Cultures. January 5 to August 28. Museum of Anthropology, Wake Forest University. In this exhibit, student curators explore why ancient mummies, members of traditional societies, and Wake Forest students are tattooed and with what designs. The traditional implements, historic illustrations, and contemporary photographs on display will excite tattoo aficionados and those just curious about a widespread custom. Admission is free. The Community Arts Cafe is now offering private instruction in piano, theory & composition, and voice & performance at the Gallery of the Arts. Two teachers are available to instruct in classical, jazz, theory and songwriting and one availble for voice & performance. Prospective students should call or drop by the gallery for more information. Central Library Gallery is currently exhibiting the works of Russian artist Lyudmila Skorodinskaya. Lyudmila Skorodinskaya has been compared to the epitome of a Russian Artist. Her work is described as full of passion for the subjects she paints, the process of painting and for the color she uses with her images taking on a glow from within. For her first exhibit in Winston Salem, she has chosen a collection of oils and pastels of women and botanicals. Stop by Central Library and enjoy Lyudmila's beautiful work from April 1-June 30, 2010.
THE SALEM BAND SUMMER CONCERT SERIES: At the Salem Square. June 1, 15, 29, July 13, 27, August 10 and 24, 8pm. The Salem Band continues its' 150 year tradition of presenting free concerts with an extremely wide variety of music. On Salem Square - lawn chairs, blankets and picnics are welcome. Free. FIVE WEEK MODERN DANCE SUMMER INTENSIVE WITH JAN VAN DYKE: Tuesdays, June 1-29, 7-8:30pm. In the Cultural Arts Center. All classes are intermediate/advanced level. THE BIG SCREEN: DR. ZHIVAGO: Against the backdrop of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, poet-doctor Yuri Zhivago (Sharif) carries on an illicit love affair with his muse, Lara (Christie). Based on the Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize-winning novel, Doctor Zhivago ushered in a new kind of historical epic, one that embraced romance more than docudrama, and the result was one of the most popular love stories ever brought to the screen.
